My current fort is in some badlands with limited wood (cactuses) and salt water lakes. I've stabilized towards the end of year two. The big realization was using glazed stone pots instead of barrels. This was originally because no wood but apparently if you have clay source it's just a huge straight up improvement over barrels!
The big thing I'm worried about now is fresh water for when my dudes inevitably get hurt. I've done a lot of reading about controlled flooding and screw pumps and diagonal pressure negation and I think I can try it but oh god in gonna flood my whole fort aren't I.
