honestly kinda glad big run is over

i missed top 5% by a few eggs this time, but i kinda really dislike the results-oriented thinking that comes with stuff like big run ::(

i like salmon run because the game is fun, not because i get high scores

yeah, like. on the one hand, i do like some level of competitiveness in my video games/things to grind for. on the other hand, the tradeoff between trying to win shifts to push hazard % up (for better chances at loads of eggs) and just going Hard on eggs/luring all the time is a tough tradeoff to optimize / play around

the randomness involved in waves/weapon allotments also Does Not Help (seriously, i wish it would at least /try/ to pick vaguely fair distributions of weapons that arent "two bamboozlers and two sloshers" sometimes - the fact that you can just get absolutely dicked by weapon rolls on wave 2 or 3 is kinda heartbreaking); the fixed-seed overfishing thing theyre gonna add resolves that in a nicer way

i really like big run for what it is; i wish that its results was more splatfest-y, or even just based on the highest evp rank you hit during it (sorta like regular slammin run). and i love duoing it with the mistses no matter what, but my god the absolute lack of insight into where the buckets are until afterwards does not help with pressure to Do Well For My Friends

i'm glad that we just have regular slammin run again now so that i can focus on just improving at that in general && consistently hitting evp ~200 => consistently hitting evp ~400 => better dealing with higher hazard levels & ignoring chum & not dying etc, i like the general improvement loop of salmon run and the fact that theres no real pressure or FOMO involved in it and it's just Something To Play And Get Better At Because I Enjoy It And Want To Do It Well At A High Level

yeah, i really wish there was a reward based on like... grizzco points accrued, kinda like rulers for splatfest. that way the RNG is way less emphasized and its more about how much you play, win or lose, regardless of wave types

i love to play with friends, but i feel like there's so much focus on strats and gameplay that just... isn't a part of normal SR gameplay

i'm almost considering just... playing it like a normal wildcard rotation next time. towards the end i played with a 4 stack and tried to lure hard and it just... didn't work out. we had so many wipes or waves where we "only" got like 35 eggs because we were overluring and the basket got overwhelmed. towards the end we were just intentionally wiping if we had a bad wave 1 ::/

and that kind of gameplay just isn't fun for me.

it didn't even work!! the highest we got was 133, and i got a 138 nightless with 3 randos where we didn't use coordinated lure strats at all... so i think next time i'm just gonna play with friends and not care about score and just do what's fun. if i get top 5%, great, but the thing that i've wanted the most out of that (badge) i've already got. so why not try and make it as fun as possible

yeah! like, with luring hard the risk of slammin lids moving up too close => steelheads fuckin you from behind the lids or w/e is just too big, i think, and it tends to be a bit of an antipattern. my high score of 121 ended up being with 3 randoms where in wave 1 we managed to deposit all 48 eggs that dropped in wave 1 high tide bc we had a good set of weapons for Killing Everything, then we had decent midtide wave 2 and 3 - and they were just kinda mid 30s mid tides; they couldve gone better but they were really nothing special in terms of weapons/spawns/etc

i'm really not sure what the best strat is in big run to begin with (i think it's both highly spawn-dependent, which is a bit gross, as well as probably best if you aggressively murder as soon as things spawn for ~30s and then do more luring/etc in the back half while snatchers are doing their thing on the handfuls of eggs left from the start) / the general amount of rng involved feels Not Great. like imagine having a good first two rounds then you get a double boozler round in wave 3. good luck lmao.

i hope the overfishing thingy theyre lookin at adding ends up being where the competitiveness of big run goes and it sorta becomes like drg EDDs. i really love the general vibe of big run; i dont like that theres a secret scoreboard to it (why can't we get live bucket breakdowns?? why can't it just be set thresholds from beforehand of like 90 / 115 / 140 or something?? why does it have to be a competition????); i hope they figure out a way to make it work more like splatfests in the future

(unless they introduce a new king salmonid per each big run theyd have to either reuse trophies or move to a different reward system.... honestly what i think would be neat if every cleared shift had a king salmonid appearance so that big runs were scale-farming fests, and bronze scales or something / # of king salmonid splats determined rewards, or SOMETHING. literally anything other than dynamic bucketing FOMO hell)
