this is gonna be pretty rambly and is a few months late so i'm slapping this with a read more and not tagging it for the mtg tag

i mean honestly i don't know how to feel about magic in general right now

it's kinda... the primary hyperfixation/special interest card game in the card game part of my brain and it is hard for it to not be that! a lot of the general decisions that are being made i feel neutral at best and "oh god this fucking Sucks" at worst. like... "idk?? a dr who set?? sure?? okay?? This Is Not For Me!!" compared to literally $1000 for 4 packs of literally unplayable magic cards

i'm glad that i'm good enough at drafts to go infinite on arena and not spend money on it ever, but i find myself just becoming less and less interested in new sets by the month. i think this is partially pandemic-related (i have not been to a friday night magic since march 2020, and went to one in-person prerelease in 2021 after vaccines were out and the store required masks) and partially "jesus christ there were only two months last year that did not have a new set in them"

and this is kind of where 40k stuff is coming in i guess. some of these cards are really fucking cool and really good! triumph of saint catherine is such a sweet design and is, well was, revitalizing a legacy archetype! but i just cannot bring myself to care about its flavor! idk who saint catherine is! i just think this card is cool! and idk why it had to be on a 40k card!!

even with magic being such a big thing for me i just cannot keep up with all the cards. there are new commander products every set now and a bunch of other supplementary products and i just can't pay attention to all of them. i don't even know if i want to. it feels like way too much of a good(??) thing. (good has question marks after it cause uh. well. i like new cards and i like playing this game but the increasing pace of releases and booster types and ~chase variants~ is more indicative of hasbro and wotc trying to drain whales of every cent they can!)

i like playing commander with friends. i like playing competitively (when i can). and i feel like whoever came up with the "this product is not for you" line is celebrated at wotc daily.

welp here we are at the end of the rambles with no satisfying conclusion cause i don't know what the conclusion will be! tbh i kinda wish my brain would let me quit this game at this point, but idk if that will ever happen. i'm just trying to give money to wotc less and spend more money on printer ink
