I think this is really a live event posting phenomenon; people do the same thing for the game awards or Eurovision. But sports are a much more frequent live event type, so they allow for someone to be this type of poster much more frequently.

Yeah it's this exactly. When watching live, especially on Twitter where instant reactions are expected, posting an "It Starts..." Is usually like, shorthand for "ah fuck my team is starting to collapse and give up the big lead they had".
It's very much the same thing as the VGAs and seeing everyone go "YOOOOOOOO" or the keysmashing when like, Armored Core 6 was announced.
