honestly historical fiction/fantasy/etc (such as fallen london) gets it's own great version of this, which is like "hey so i was looking up medieval england and did you know (absolutely baffling fact)? we're making this a core part of our story now"
it's not just research, it's finding the weird shit and embracing it as core
The fun thing is when you do this and people think it's unrealistic or even anachronistic (like with the electric boats in the Khanate – a thing that absolutely really existed in period)
