Oof, what a subpar construction. 21 across ('Not worth a ___') is just too obscure for a Monday no matter what, and same goes for 15 across ('Kind of tide'). Then there's the hyuk hyuk theme (particularly unfond of 17 across, which is classic 'NYT constructors are a certain kind of people' moment) and another appearance from one of my instant eye roll fills, the use of 'NO TAR' which has shown up like sixteen times in the last two weeks of crosswords.

in reply to @bruno's post:

it's been a while since ive done the nytxw regularly, but mondays were always a bit of a disappointment

after doing enough crosswords it's just easier/simpler/faster to fill in the grid regardless of theme, and even stronger themes are more of a "oh, okay" rather than the click that can come from a well-made thursday

i also definitely get way more mad at bad fill on mondays lol

The NYT crossword is designed like an episode of Family Feud except instead of polling 100 people the constructor just walks up to Will Shortz and asks him to name some words that are definitely real words the average New York Times reader uses, and he says things like sou, een, atest, etailer, elhi and alee.
