I’ve been playing Immortals Fenyx Rising because it’s free on PS+ and I wanted a breezy distraction of a game and like… this game has the worst narrative direction of any game I’ve ever seen. Plenty of game narratives are underbaked or rushed or have a low quality bar but this is a very professionally done bundle of terrible ideas.

Whoever directed this (I’m going to guess someone with a screenwriting background. Or someone who wishes they had a screenwriting background.) had no clue whatsoever of how to actually develop a story that would tonally fit the overall experience goals of the game… or maybe their creative director couldn’t communicate? It undercuts itself at every step. Every line of voice acting is painful to hear, not because the VAs are doing a bad job, but because the underlying direction of the story is awful. It’s so smarmy and seemingly contemptuous of its source material. Who thought any of this was a good idea? Why weren’t they stopped?
