1981: The DeLorean Motor Company releases its first and only product, the DMC DeLorean, a sports car notable for its striking stainless steel body panels. Due to poor fit and finish, high cost of production, and issues with rust, the DeLorean is a commercial failure and the company goes out of business.

1985: Because the DeLorean was a commercial flop, it's a weird and exotic car that gets used as the basis for the time machine in Back to the Future, making the car popular with nerds who have bad taste the world over

2019: Elon Musk, a gargantuan nerd whose life is one long and tiresome reenactment of Ready Player One, decides to make a giant midlife crisis truck with stainless steel body panels.

2023: The 'Cybertruck' starts rolling out to Tesla fanboys who pre-ordered it. Due to the stainless steel construction, it has poor fit and finish, is much more expensive than the competition, and has issues with rust.

as a big fan of back to the future you are 100% correct about the taste thing. i love the delorean because it's a piece of shit.

if i had it my way they'd have used the pinto for the time machine instead. god i need to write about the pinto too that's one of the funniest car/american bullshit stories imo

What's so funny is that Elon Musk had the perfect opportunity to make a small truck: most blue collar workers and farmers are so desperate for a small frame truck and an electric truck would be able to fit in the EPA regs. This guy royally biffed a golden opportunity for ego, so par for the course.

the thing looks like it's useless for hauling anyway. my ancient 1995 Toyota short-bed could have held more (and it's still on the road). but I guess the vehicle exists out of pure spite: its earliest announcements provoked laughter so Musk has been trebling down ever since.

iirc they got big tax write offs to put their factory on a sectarian fault line in belfast, in the hopes it might let them do something other than shoot each other. urban legend had it that they had separate entrances for catholics and protestants

Stainless steel is rust resistant, not immune to rust; the stainless steel body panels on a cybertruck or a delorean will still rust when exposed to the elements. The delorean had a clear coat applied to it to protect the actual steel. On the cybertruck, the clear coat is a $5000 optional add-on. Either approach is for lots of reasons worse than a conventional body panel covered with paint.
