Stainless steel can't really be bent in the same way as mild steel, which is why every single body panel on a Cybertruck is a flat, straight piece of metal.

Except the front fender. The front fender is not actually bent, but is held in shape by two spot welds on either side; it's just in tension. If those welds or the underlying structure were to fail, it would suddenly go "bwoinggg" and spring back into being a flat sheet of metal.

I think of this as every Cybertruck, constantly, from the moment it rolls off the line to its final shutdown before becoming ewaste, being in horrendous pain.

I'm still trying to figure out exactly what the hell tesla did or failed to do because you can very much bend and stamp stainless, it kinda sucks to form but it also kinda sucks to weld! Most car companies have gotten over it and use stamped stainless for loads of boring things like mufflers, but I guess most car companies can make a panel whatever shape they like; they're not also trying to make it a bulletproof floating monocoque that has to use specific silly materials cause the boss said a bunch of dumb shit without consulting anybody at a press conference and will tank the company if anyone contradicts him

I'm not a metal scientist but afaik it's about the specific gauge and alloy of stainless that they use and also the supply chain issues of where the cutting and forming would have to go in the whole process of forming and heat treating the part.

Either that or Elon was like "a metal brake costs HOW MUCH? no, fuck you, just weld it in place", either/or
