so if you follow me, you're probably aware that I maintain something called the "Yuri Spreadsheet". it's a resource for yuri that is 1) available in English and 2) available physically, not just digitally. I originally made it for my own personal use, but figured that other people might find it useful, so I made it publicly viewable. And people seemed to like it!

At the same time, it is just a spreadsheet on Google Sheets. Which isn't always the most convenient for people! My wife and I had talked for a while about making an actual website with the information, but never really made any meaningful progress... until now!!!!! You see, on my birthday back in April, my wife revealed to me that she had been working on it in secret for months as a birthday present! (other presents I have received from my wife in the past include, but are not limited to: a sword, a printed copy of a novel-length fanfiction she wrote for me, and a sega dreamcast).

So yeah! There's a website now! It's pretty good! It's very lightweight and doesn't even use javascript due to my all-consuming hatred for Web 2.0 and modern website and application design in general! You can go on it on basically any rectangle that can connect to the Internet*. So what are you waiting for????? Go check it out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

happy yuri day!!! i hope you enjoy reading about girls who love girls. (i know i do!)

*no guarantees but it should work on any computer or phone or tablet. probably.

some fun behind the scenes:

  • because I was keeping this a secret, I couldn't ask her to adjust anything in the spreadsheet, so there's a lot of misc special cases
  • the cover images are scraped from a bunch of different places. A lot of them return a placeholder image instead of a 404, so I've just stored the MD5 of those placeholder images and filter them out
  • I made everything but the fonts myself. The background image is the first and only time I've used a pixel art creator
  • the title is based on the cardcaptor sakura logo
  • there's a lot of caching. the database query for the table view takes like. several seconds the first time it loads. i don't know how to database
  • you can add .detail for the thumbnail view or .list for the table to any view. there's a .rss too, I have no idea if it works
  • I love my wife so much!!!
  • the original domain was yuri.town, but my wife registered it and I forgot so I had to get a new one
  • i am not a frontend developer. This was my first time using CSS features like "variables" and "flex box." if it doest't work in your browser i'm sorry, I don't know what I'm doing

Ah, I love seeing clean, plain, well-written HTML... good for the soul. Also I love yuri. (obviously)

I second the opinion that more details on why/why not things are recommended would be cool if that is feasible/not too much work. Thanks so much for sharing! :3
