before the bomb blew up, his artifact launched him into a different reality where it's 1997 before the incident thus he ends up preventing it from ever happening. in the process though a piece of his reality's artifact got stuck in his body and it's kinda slowly spreading. he basically gets quarantined to a repurposed sector c where flare's trying to find out what tf happened

also three other characters merge with their alternate selves and have shadowy patches on them that are ALSO spreading
and yes i know that's not where the heart usually is located but you know what it is for him now

Due to unknown machinations of the universe, both grand and black soul gems can be successfully filled by casting Soul Trap on ketchup.
