BUGHOLDER'S EPIPHANY PRESENTS: BUGHOLDER'S EPIPHANY, WORLDBUILDER AND MUSICIAN CREATING THAT WHICH IS UNNORMAL AND UNORTHODOX

I saw @jessfromonline's post about how Atomic Heart lost a demographic of trans girls and it kinda got me thinking about how quickly that game left the sphere, it feels like. Then it kinda got me thinking about other games as well.

It's been three weeks since Atomic Heart launched. In that timeframe up to it I had seen a lot of content, from stuff talking about the hot communism robots to the problems with the game.

Aside from brief activity on the gaming subreddits I follow, Jess' post is literally the only thing I've seen about the game since then, for real. I don't use twitter anymore so that might skew the view for me a little, but, it certainly feels odd to say the least.

Hogwarts Legacy meanwhile, released earlier than that, almost a month ago now. It had longer activity going on but I only see it in small spurts now.

Literally the only thing I see people still bring up consistently and constantly is Elden Ring, and it's been almost a year now. And it just got an announcement for DLC and I'm sure people will start blowing up with that again.

I'm sure someone who's got better attention on things than I do will counterpoint this or point out why it feels this way, but honestly it's just a weird obersvation that I felt the need to write down in between writing stories about strange, surreal worlds and shit

I think it speaks to whether or not a game has staying power, which isn't necessarily a sign that a game is good or bad, but I do think good games are more likely to linger more actively in people's minds. People still talk a lot about BotW (even before TotK/BotW2 was announced), and that was a dual launch on Switch and Wii U 6 years ago! People still talk about not just ER, but Sekiro, the Darks Souls games, Bloodborne, Demon's Souls (and not just because of the remake), and even goddamn Kingsfield! People still talk about Hollow Knight, and did so before we knew anything about Silksong! MH Rise is nearing its final update, and yet half the posts in a lot of MonHun communities are still from people playing World! Personally, I still can't shut up about the Mega Man Zero games, which came out in the 2000s but I "only" played in the early 2010s! Hell, for a lot of people Super Metroid is still the defining Metroid game! Of course, there are some games that were fun that I played and then never really thought much about afterward - Dandara was pretty good when I played the Switch version (especially after they patched the final boss to be more manageable). Pokémon Scarlet was... fine-ish, and SV seems to have maintained some momentum, but you'd think a game from a series that big would keep more people's active interest a bit longer. Hell, Kirby and the Forgotten Land was phenomenal, but I never really find myself thinking about it after having 100%ed it aside from when I see a cover or remix of its music. But then you have games like Atomic Heart or Hogwarts Legacy, which get some initial attention from being flashy and spicy in one way or another, and then they just fall off the map once people realize there's not much there.
