Maybe that's just how his language works. Maybe he's actually delivering a very philosophical speech about Galactic Federation law only applying to the poor and the marginalized, the need for him to resort to piracy, and it just comes off as a bunch of screams because Samus didn't get the auto-translate powerup.

i feel like "space pirates" as a translation for the name of an entire race is some kind of orientalism on the galactic federation's part

edit: at least specifically about the bird mantis sort of dudes who jump around and shoot "~" at you

Part of my nerdage for Metroid is divided between agreeing with you on it being some in-universe orientalism/catchall bullshit by the galactic federation and wondering how it's explained in the original Japanese because Metroid's localization is funky and plays it loose and that makes problems iirc

Edit: nevermind just saw a comment on the previous post pointing out that it was a collective whoops. Still wonder what the hell it is in the original translation because again the translations for Metroid tends to play shit very loose which causes a fair amount of inconsistencies...

Side note: I more like the idea that Samus does have auto translate, but she has it disabled for whenever she sees Ridley because she fucking hates the piss out of him

in reply to @atomicthumbs's post:

there are basically two prevailing theories based on the evidence found in games:

  • "Space Pirates" are a collective, and each game has a different race because different localities are patrolled by whoever knows that region best
  • Space Pirates constantly use extensive and radical genetic modification to mutate themselves into the most capable and terrible possible creatures, for space terror reasons. so in this case they MIGHT have originally been one race but at this point who knows

Sorry to jump in, I'm just so excited to talk and share about Metroid; There are other species that call themselves Space Pirates, and Space Pirates is a name they applied to themselves per the manga. They are mostly the '~' lobster shooty guys, but they also include the Kihunters, and the various types of troopers in the Prime games, Ridley, Kraid, etc. Their organization is actually a very fascinating one, if brutal and cruel one.
