i think i know why i like the crosswords but don't really like any of the other word puzzles on puzzmo; most of them really just test your ability to (1) recognize which sequences of letters are "words" in the sense of belonging to a dictionary, and sometimes (2) take into consideration the frequency of letters à la scrabble scoring, but crosswords actually get you to engage with the semantics of those words, often in very indirect or playful ways, which genuinely helps out my generally poor lexical recall abilities
