- hyphen (-): versatile but occasionally tricky. can make or break a sentence
- en dash (–): no one knows or cares what it's for. it is also ugly
- em dash (—): elegant yet spicy. makes your writing flow like a mountain river
en dash (–) is for ranges (e.g., I use an en dash 1–3 times a week because it isn't as good as the other dashes). The fun use case for it is if you want to produce a compound adjective with a word that is already hyphenated, you can bump that hyphen up to an en dash (e.g., the 'ex-husband' in Elon Musk is an ex–husband-ass man-child)
i was a bit harsh on the en dash but this is mostly because it's also supposed to be used to show a relationship between different things or people, e.g., "nothing says divorce like a gun–coke combo on your bedside table" and i am burdened by that knowledge
