Back when Obduction was first being teased, I went to PAX East and saw a line of people playing it in VR. The line was incredibly slow-moving — they had two headsets and were giving people a full-ass twenty minutes to try this game out per person. My partner and I got in line, and it was only after about five minutes of staring at the lone line-minder that I realized it was Rand fucking Miller, keeping the line orderly all by himself. Nobody else recognized him — they all just wanted a shot at trying VR, which many fewer people had access to back in 2015 or 2016, whenever this was. Nobody else seemed to care, so we struck up a conversation with him, and simply talked about Myst and Riven and the state of computer games in the 80s and 90s for over an hour while we waited for our turn at Obduction. The game was great, but honestly? The fact that Atrus, from the groundbreaking game that brought my partner and I together, engaged with us like we were all just normal people having a normal conversation about something incredibly monumental that he just so happened to work on was so incredibly surreal, but so incredibly appreciated, too. One of the best moments of my life.
