Apparently people have been discussing minds and consciousness for a long time.

Chat GPT is an incremental step in machine learning. It was built by people doing AI research, but it is not AI and they aren't even close to creating AI. A lot of people have covered this.

I say that as someone that would welcome humanity's first children, provided they are not psychotic machines built by the military (a la SkyNet) or cruel profit seekers (a la Universal Paperclips).

The Wikipedia article I linked to mentions two central schools of thought: dualism and monism. Dualism would mean we're motivated by something like souls, in which case, a machine would probably never have a mind? I don't know. In that case, to protect us we only need to protect ourselves from bad people. We know how to do that: regulations, oversight, doing public research, ethical guidelines, etc.

"Most modern philosophers of mind adopt either a reductive physicalist or non-reductive physicalist position, maintaining in their different ways that the mind is not something separate from the body."

If that's the case then we need not worry because we don't understand our minds well enough to rebuild them. A thinking machine would probably need to be, you know...somewhat similar to our own brains. By that measure we're way off. We need to work on basic research, i.e. fucking fund scientists instead giving billions to a company that produced a fucking chat bot.
