Just having a real "please, please, please do one lookup before running your mouth" Sunday watching a lot of WSJ fans scream about how they're worried Ichi the Witch is gonna go all-misogyny all the time after one chapter

It's almost as if they don't realize the female author has a long-running series they could look to which may or may not have covered topics like this without kicking landmines left and right

had another "the gromble trampled krumm" moment at work today when someone came to my desk and asked why I looked so pensive and without missing a beat I just said "do you think achewood onstad is going to miura himself at a young age or is he too divorced for that redemption already?"

Like, the scale of loved cartoonist to hated cartoonist over a lifetime is Miura on the honest end, Scott Adams on the wicked side, and I think Onstad is way more Adams than Miura now

As a result of accidentally starting a manga podcast, one of my last splurges before I went into budget lockdown was grabbing everything that sounded potentially trashy or entertainingly discussable from the then-current Rightstuf sale. As I go through more of these I'm probably gonna toss down some fast takes on them.

This Is Screwed up but I Was Reincarnated as a GIRL in Another World! vol. 1: thus far the highest tonal whiplash of anything in this batch, because what sounded like it was going to be a stupid breezy isekai farce immediately went with implied molestation and then multiple chapters of the main character wildly masturbating in isolation to close. If I did not have two volumes of it already it'd be a hard pass but I may as well push on and see if it does anything. (The fact that I did not immediately pivot into volume 2 says a lot.)

SHWD vol. 1: uh this kind of rules and is extremely my shit? Stands for "Special Hazardous Waste Disposal", apparently there was A War at some point and people decided to make Resident Evil-ass BOWs during it, but instead of it being zombies, they were living nightmares that give off EM waves which drive most folks mad (ie, frenzied, panicked, berserk, etc). We follow mostly the female staff of the Japanese SHWD divisions via a veteran and a rookie, and some of the other branches loaning cast for an interesting dynamic. The concept's good, the art bounces between incredible and casual without ever feeling like it misses a step, and my only downside on this is looking up when volume 2 comes out and seeing "2024".

Superwomen in Love! Honey Trap and Rapid Rabbit vol. 5/whole series: The final volume of this one, this is a breezy yuri comedy with tokusatsu (mostly Kamen Rider) trappings all over it. You can tell the creator is a fan by their dumbass interstitial sketches and inside-cover gags (most of which are "here is how to perform the transformation gestures!" or "sketches of what the obvious toy would look like for each powerup"). Didn't wear out its welcome, kept escalating until it couldn't anymore and then it wrapped. Good stuff and I highly recommend, especially if you have toku weeb DNA running through your veins.

I have just peeled the plastic wrap off of "Does it Count if You Lose Your Virginity to an Android?" so we'll see if that one is a hidden gem or a wild misfire next time I suppose
