@Ragepyro suggested horror. (5 mutation choices instead of 4, can fire a radiation beam)

sorry i took a bit to get to that one i had no adhd medication and didn't feel like playing video games for like a while.

anyways the story behind this one is funny. i found myself at 1 HP with strong spirit (survive death once, recharges in the next area once you heal to full HP) already depleted early on in this level. then i found this blood hammer (melee weapon which deals 1 damage to you if you swing and don't hit any enemies with it), and i thought to myself "oh, great! this will be handy, but i probably shouldn't use this for now since i'm at 1 HP and this is the weapon which deals 1 damage to you if you swing and don't hit any enemies with it"

and then after a moment i ran out of laser rifle ammo. i found myself at 1 HP, with my only damage source being the blood hammer (melee weapon which deals 1 damage to you if you swing and don't hit any enemies with it), which was going to deplete my one (1) hit point thus killing me if i were to swing and not hit any enemies with it. i then proceeded to swing without hitting any enemies with it and promptly died.

you may be wondering. what does he/they mean his/their only source of damage was the blood hammer? what about that radiation beam? is he/they stupid?

yes, i am stupid, this is a situation where i should have used the beam. but the beam is weird.

i love horror! if i had to pick my mains it would be crystal, horror, and rogue. but horror's beam, i'm pretty sure im not using it optimally.

it costs radiation to use, and that means you're using it at the cost of mutating later. however, enemies absorb the radiation of the beam, so as long as you're 100% accurate, you won't actually lose any rads from using the beam. problem is, it fires a continuous stream of pellets that makes it so if you just fire it at an enemy until it dies, some of the pellets will still be in the air when the enemy dies, so they'll miss and won't get recycled, so the beam isn't actually free.

what i end up doing is i completely forget about the beam until i get an ultra mutation and radiation becomes an ammo resource rather than a mutation progression resource.

to be clear, i am not touting this as the optimal way to play. this is a failing of mine, and i should learn to recognize when the beam will be helpful, and perhaps i should learn to be okay with losing some radiation. if i play horror again (duplicate character suggestions are okay!) i'll try and use the beam a lot more!
