as far as i can tell they only got on anyone's radar at all by spending a lot of money. they have no particular claim to authority. it might as well be elon musk giving out $5 trophies for games he liked. they are not arbiters of what is "good", especially not to the exclusion of your own feelings. it means nothing. free yourself

Most awards seem to be designed to glorify the awarder rather than the awardee. For example getting a knighthood in the UK is all about getting well-liked people to publicly kneel in front of the monarch and then add “of the british empire” to their title
Awards in general shouldn't mean shit to someone's personal enjoyment of something tbh. There are many games some would consider a 7-8/10 that I liked way more than many so called GotY games, and also many 10/10 games that for me were a 6/10 at best. I watch TGA more for the game announcements than for the actual awards, honestly.
the only legitimate awards were the ones I gave out on my tumblr between 2015 and 2018 or so

the only borderline good parts of the game awards are the indie game-related awards, and even then it's only about the more well-known indies
The IGF Awards at GDC are better, actually involving game developers judging and fair standards for who is indie and gets to submit.
