some things i'm particularly excited about:

  • asset shelves, which are implemented and scriptable in 4.0, although this release doesn't actually have any shelves implemented, so you'll have to make your own if you want to use them (check out Scripting > Templates > Python > Ui Asset Shelf).
  • bone collections instead of layers (finally!)
  • the new AgX tonemapper, which makes lighting look way better.
  • light linking, which lets you easily control which lights affect which objects and which objects cast shadows from which lights.
  • possibly the most exciting of all, node tools! these let you turn geometry node graphs into tools you can run interactively in the editor. here's a good summary of them:
