Okay but now I’m imagining a common dragon game (among those that breathe fire) as older wyrmlings is putting popcorn kernels in your mouth and seeing who can pop the most of them without burning or choking. In addition to being hilarious when the popcorn forces their mouth open to the giggles of their nestmates, this also teaches them how to control their fire when startled as well as a valuable lesson about how unpleasant over burning can make food taste. The salt is an added bonus, although eating the popcorn isn’t great for obligate carnivores like most fire breathing dragons - the leftovers are fed to the crows and ravens that like to congregate near dragon lairs.
This helps establish an important relationship: birds get protection from midsize predators from this arrangement as well as occasional food, while the dragons get companions as well as an early alarm system for anything powerful or bold enough to approach the dragon’s lair. Some very old dragons even learn the language of their local flock through sheer proximity over the centuries, and return to this childhood game to feed the crows when the realize the popcorn has become part of the bird’s mythology as something their ancestors received. Sadly, crows are prone to over exaggeration, and after finally tasting this semi divine food the youngest generation always says it taste “caw.”
