one of my major radicalizing themes post medical incarceration was learning about how in the us this was leveraged against people like black activists and abused wives, among others.

anywhere you can be unilaterally transported and isolated is a weapon and a threat. people genuinely have to worry about not seeming crazy regardless of being ill or not because you dont even have to commit a crime to have your life ruined by a three day hold

i think that there's a deep cruelty to the fact that you can't even go there "for a good reason" without it cascading out into the rest of your life in a way that damages your ability to do things because people assume you're one bad day away from doing something "scary"

like my mom never threatened me with going to an in-patient facility, but she did on several occasions ask if i wanted to go to an in-patient for my various problems i wasn't coping well with as i was growing up, and like, as a queer person growing up in the mid 00s, absolutely not??? i knew what happened to people like we in places like that
