things i should probably be paying more attention to: Varvara and the whole hundred rabbits / uxntal ecosystem. living off grid writing software with nontrivially-pronounceable names and hosting most of your code on sourcehut has medium crank energy, to me, but at some point i should take an in depth look at what they've actually built instead of just checking out the vibes

(and to be clear, medium crank energy is not inherently a bad thing. i am not currently a crank but once i snap and start also rebuilding the whole of computing from the ground up i will be at least some amount of a crank too)

it always looked cool to me. it's sad that urbit and its ilk have been peeling people away from uxn and this whole world, because this seems to be striving for the real thing.

in other words, uxn is not a lackadaisical fash-lite landgrab on a half-assed rent-seeking cryptocurrency/NFT-backed "websites but not" platform, emulating, pirating, the look and feel of it, like urbit is. uxn/100rabbits seems genuine.

As a certifiable crank, I strongly recommend you spend your pre-crank time acquainting yourself with a wide variety of moderately-crank things. Once you go over, you'll be too busy harrumphing to appreciate new stuff much, and the subtle differences between your crankiness and other creators' crankiness tends to lead to NIH, so you won't want to use their stuff anyway.

(I also keep 👀 their stuff from a distance and thinking I should take a closer look.)
