i think you could make a case that the fediverse is an experiment in communalism. which is highly unfortunate because i like communalism

(at least, i like the version of it i reinvented from first principles a few years ago. i did google murray bookchin at some point but i have yet to actually read his work)

but i think maybe "we are voting to sanction the People's Republic of Boulder and its residents because the deputy treasurer said some dumb shit that sucked, or the mayor kicked somebody out over some dumb bullshit, or one of the residents was talking shit, or we don't think the community safety council are doing their jobs, or they're whatever the equivalent of Pleroma in this analogy is" is not a thing that would happen if you actually did meatspace communalism, and the varying bad outcomes you see on Mastodon are more representative of Reddit Mod Mindset than they are of any particular politics

counter-however, as far as I can tell, Reddit Mod Mindset is a plague not escaped from in irl activism, and so a view that doesn't contend with that is probably useless. maybe as long as there are big fish and small ponds there will be Big Fish In Small Ponds and political analysis needs to respond to that. and hell, maybe Marble Blockchain has an answer I haven't thought of. idk it's late and I'm rambling

in reply to @cactus's post:

RL stuff has a moderating effect because it's got a high FPF (Face Punch Factor) but organization rules tend to frown on that so a lot of politicking has to happen instead just to be able to do the equivalent of one face-punch because someone did something undeniably racist and over the line
