I mean, the thing about debating whether retroactively fiddling with "Han shot first" is crap from a story perspective and/or undermines character progression is that George Lucas is a bafflingly shit-for-brained tasteless dork who, on the evidence of the work he did after he got too big for other people to just fix it for him before the public saw it (and for him to thus silently take the credit), wouldn't know story or character if they ganged up and fucking bit him

I'll grudgingly allow that he seems to have a grasp on toyetics; you can watch the whole prequel trilogy going "oh, right, another planet-themed playset, mhm, I see what you did there, George"

Big-budget Lucas-era Star Wars is like listening to the worst fucking nerd you know explain their special snowflake D&D setting, how epic it all is, the world-threatening and detail-light Eeeevil, the reams of incomprehensible backstory, the endless textureless oatmeal Lore that's just a catalogue dump of contextless Glup Shittos and Legends of the Whills

Star Wars was only ever as good as people could make it despite him, but he showed 'em, he showed 'em all; get rich enough and nobody can edit you any more, nobody's allowed to ad-lib it better than you can write it, and by god you can make an otherwise perfectly good actor stand there pantomiming painful constipation and creak out some tin-eared shit about "killing younglings"
