He was seeing how they were doing, in their holy task of repopulating the Earth with all creatures big and small.

Most of the animals were doing well. Some, like the sheep, had used their head start well, and were fruitful indeed, even if they were as panicky and skittish as ever at the steadily growing flocks of wolves.

Even the animals that Noah found it hard to keep himself from naming vermin were mostly doing well, with snakes and rats and mice all thriving in the shadow of the bigger creatures all around them, but as he walked through a small copse, he spotted a couple of peculiar, and glum-looking, serpents.

Crucially, there were only two of them!

"Why have you not taken the Lord's word to heart and worked to fill the Earth?", Noah inquired, half concerned, and half relieved.

"It's complicated…" one of them said, looking abashed.

"Since you're here", the other one said, eager to change the subject, "do you think you could chop down a couple of trees for us?"

"We'd do it ourselves", the first one chimed in, demonstratively wiggling their tail, "but you know, no arms."

With a shrug, Noah set to, and quickly felled a couple of smallish trees for the pair. He knew that some animals would be taking longer than others, such as the elephants with their heroic gestation period, and assuming that there was a similar issue in play, he went about his business, checking up on the other animals.

Next year, as he was checking up on the animals, Noah came upon the copse once more, and how the scene had changed! The two serpents had made the now-rotten tree trunks their home, and had been joined by dozens of smaller worms.

"I'm glad to see you have taken the commandments to heart", Noah said, approaching the animals, "but you know, there's something that's been bothering me."

"Why did it take so long?" he asked.

"Ah, well", one of the two serpents said, "we're adders, you see, so we need logs to multiply."
