The mech pilot knows whose problem they are at all times. They know this because they know whose problem they aren't. By subtracting whose problem they are from whose problem they aren't, or whose they aren't from whose they are (whichever is greater), they obtain a difference, or deviation. Their character motivation uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the mech pilot from a situation where they aren't a problem to a situation where they are, and arriving at a situation where they weren't, they now are.
