i've got an Amnesia style morale/sanity mechanic in my game that i initially added as a joke but that i've now grown oddly attached to. when the player hits 0 morale, the dialogue and character interactions change.
one of the ways i indicate that Things Are Different Now is by changing the color palette at 0 morale. the effect was super easy to do (i whipped up a color lookup table in photoshop in like 30 minutes) but i love how it looks. hopefully it's enough to encourage players to explore rather than just immediately looking for a source of morale, but i'll have to see how playtests go.
i might do a writeup on this later because i've never seen a sanity mechanic in a visual novel before and i think there's a lot of fun things i can do with this
