(a picture of the bikes, but not in Brighton)
I tried to sign up the previous bikeshare, but the interface was so fucking bad that I just gave up when I tried one day and didn't bother trying again. The city council decided to phase those out because they relied on Vodafone's 3G network, and Vodafone was pulling 3G infrastructure out without any warning or consultation, so we've been without a service for a short while.
The new provider is Beryl (press release), who has a nice app, and generally seem to have a lot better user experience. I downloaded their app prematurely and found that it supported Sign In with Apple and Apple Pay, two big pluses for just convenience and privacy.
Their pricing is interesting. I don't have much experience to compare with other services, but with their Minute Bundle, it's just 5p/min for pedal bikes with no undocking fee. Which could make it significantly cheaper and faster than taking the slow-as-fuck buses in the city centre.
My main issue is the city's bike infrastructure - apart from the stretch along the A259 and Madeira Drive (which is the only physically segregated, long-distance cycling lane in the city) cycling infrastructure is pitiful and dangerous, especially among the city's arterial roads where all the places you'd want to travel to actually are. I would only ever use this service along that stretch until the city council sorts out this city's car problem.
My other problem is the fact that much of the city is really hilly - there are more e-bikes than pedal bikes in Brighton's rollout presumably to compensate, but those come with a £1.50 undocking fee with a minute bundle, which at that point doesn't really compete well with local bus fares.
When it comes out, I will try it along the A259/Madeira Drive, but it's really going to be more of a curiosity for me, because unless its faster than my normal walking route (which I'm not confident it will be) taking the seafront road is taking the long way to the city centre. We need more than a bike share to make cycling safe and worthwhile in this city.
