in reply to @skullmillione's post:

it's a reference to Edgar Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado," a short story in which a man gets revenge on his archnemesis by luring him into a cellar with a promise of rare wine

it's great, there's so much foreshadowing that flies over the asshole victim's head because he's too goddamn drunk and full of himself

like when he asks our protagonist (?) to remind him what his family coat of arms is, and his response includes the motto "nemo me impune lacessit," which is left untranslated in the original but basically means "no one screws me and gets away with it"

we never get the full picture of why the protagonist wants him dead other than "after everything he'd already done, he stooped to insult" but he hardly endears himself during his time on the page

in the end the jerk gets bricked up in an alcove and dies of a heart attack when he finally, finally sobers up enough to realize what's happening to him

His eyes flashed with a fierce light. He laughed and threw the bottle upwards with a gesticulation I did not understand.

I looked at him in surprise. He repeated the movement - a grotesque one.

"You do not comprehend?" he said.

"Not I," I replied.

"Then you are not of the brotherhood."

"How?"

"You are not of the memers."

"| ||," I said; "|| |_."

"You? Impossible! A memer?"

"A memer," I replied.

"A sign," he said, "a sign."

"Ligma balls," I answered, producing a goatse from beneath the folds of my roquelaire.

"You jest," he exclaimed, disintegrating into subatomic particles.

idk somebody else could do this even better probably

it's weird the scene where Fortunato identifies himself as a Freemason seems to get cut from the story often; the part where Montresor shows him the trowel he's purportedly carrying by way of ID is some lovely foreshadowing
