talking to my dad

A dad simulator! Hahaha!!!!!! Short and sweet. Please play it it's so good. For your friend who likes sad queer lit.

Escape Velocity

This one is just very fascinating. Feels more like a poetic graphic novel than a visual novel. Kind of sad and melancholic. For your friend who likes poetry and graphic novels.
Free.
Playtime: 20mn.

The Uncle Who Works for Nintendo

The coolest, spookiest game im listing. "You are 11 years old. You are sleeping over at your best friend's house. You and your friend like videogames. Your friend has a lot of cool games. And, believe it or not, an uncle who works for Nintendo. And he's coming to visit at midnight." This has a couple endings so i def recommend replaying it multiple times. This is the one i probably recommend the most on this list, it is such an interesting experience! For your friend who likes spooky creepypasta, and also good stories.
Free.
Playtime: 4h maybe?

Slay the Princess (Demo)

Ok it's a demo but it is just delightful to play through. Spooky scary game about saving a princess. OR IS IT? For your friend who likes fantasy.
Playtime: 2-3h

Scarlet Hollow

Same creators as above. your aunt recently died, and you're going to her funeral in the town of Scarlet Hollow. This town definitely doesn't have many secrets. This game is queer as hell. For your friend who likes scary towns and mysteries. Episode 1 is free!

dream daddy

A dating game. youre a dad that dates dads. it's very cute and chill! a delightful little game. and all the dads are hot. For your friend who likes romcoms and YA.

Another good free one that's a mix of VN and a point-and-click adventure is Purrgatory, it's about you landing in aforementioned cat-punned afterlife and you talk with a group of others who have been there for who knows how long. It's funny, sad, and queer. Always my first recommendation to folks who want to dip a toe into VN style games and also enjoyed things like Freddi Fish or Pajama Sam.

Ooooh, thank you for this. I like shorter vn experiences so I'm glad there are some on this list. I'm weak and if I can't finish a route in one or two sittings, I'll just drop it because screens hurt my eyes... TT_TT
Also, I do have a friend who's a little bit of a freak who started me off reading umineko and I was afraid to read visual novels for years after that for fear that they would All Be Like That.

I'd like to recommend Spare Parts, a very well written Visual Novel about 4 robots learning to become more human with the help of a human who got roped into everything by coincidence. Not only is there oblivious lesbians (being the MC and the first robot she meets) but also trans and nonbinary characters as well as a coming out theme for one of the other robots. It's up to three parts, with the third part not finished yet. I really enjoy it's focus on the humanization of the robotic characters, showing them slowly become more human with their own wants and goals. Even the one that doesn't want change to occur.
