This book is good. It’s about art and transness and disability and also death and the memory of the dead. Extremely cool, creative, and well-developed “non-western” (???? I think???) fantasy world. Also a very short book!!
You should read the novel The Subtweet by Vivek Shraya.
Here’s why:
- You’re a creative — this book explores very common (I think!!) but little-discussed feelings of creative competitiveness and insecurity, particularly between friends
- You care about social media and mental health — this book is about social media’s capriciousness and destructiveness
- You think women are neat — this book is about female friendship
- You care about musicians’ wellness — this book contrasts the realities of semi-celebrities who have proximity to fame and glamour despite also having day jobs and roommates
- You’re trans — the author and one of the protagonists are trans women (though the novel isn’t really about that)
- You’re a Twitter veteran — This book was written during and about the pre-Elon period and it’s worth remembering what the hell it was that we survived

Turns out I am capable of reading!! All I need is to have to travel on a train twice a week and part of the journey needs to have no internet access
Finished Neon Yang’s “The Descent of Monsters”—it’s the third novella in the Tensorate series. I wish I had read the other two more recently (I read them before the pandemic I think) but I caught up well-enough. A fun fantasy mystery novella revealed in letters, reports, and diary excerpts. I really enjoyed it and read it in two days. Many many LGBT characters as well.
