We are just about at football season and I'm very excited (go birds). Around this time, I always get to thinking about the jock/nerd divide and how often we seem to frame sports fandom vs. fandom for other games like they are virtually incompatible with one another.
It's just weird. I like games, so I find almost every form of competition, including sports, reality shows, drinking games, and--as should be obvious by now--video games all engrossing, provided they are designed in a compelling manner. Football is one of the most fascinating due to the sheer scale and variability at play (not to mention some very smart people figuring out how to package it into a very digestible TV production). So yea, I'm a "sportsball" person, but I'm always surprised when people who are seemingly interested in games aren't, or are--in fact--vocally opposed to the notion of enjoying sports (unless it's a moral opposition).
Anyway I did a fantasy draft for the first time last night and it was definitely among the nerdiest things I've ever done. I now look forward to watching the Eagles as well as playing NFL auto-chess with my carefully selected roster of champions like Patrick Mahomes and Ja'Marr Chase.
