Interior - Living Room

I'm sitting on my couch. Arrietty climbs up my phone’s charging cord to reach the couch. She sees my phone —

Arrietty
What’s that?

Me
It’s my phone.

I turn on the screen and tap around a bit as Arrietty looks on in awe.

Me
It does many things. It just reminded me to take my meds. I can use it to talk to people near and far, by writing or by talking. It has access to tons of knowledge, and it even takes pictures and videos!

Arrietty
Wow, if I had a phone I’d use it all the time!

Me
Well, it does have some bad parts…

Arrietty
Like what?

Me
Well, sometimes if I use it too much, it hurts my arms.

Arrietty
Oh no! What else?

Me
It can also connect me to mean people, which makes me angry or sad.

Arrietty
Can you tell them to go away?

Me
Usually they’re not talking directly to me — it's more like they’re shouting in a town center for everyone in view to hear. So I just had to stop myself from going to those places.

Arrietty
Is it hard to stop going to the bad places?

Me
Yeah. Sometimes people I like to listen to are in the same areas, so to stop myself from going there too often I asked my partner to block them.

Arrietty
I see… it sounds like it’s better to not use it all the time. You need strong arms for climbing, and it’s bad to be sad or angry about people you can’t change.

I nod, and Arrietty clambers down my sweatpants leg, waves goodbye, and disappears under some furniture.
