what happened this episode
sakura and syaoran both show up over 15 minutes early to their date to the aquarium. kero stays home on tomoyo's insistence. at the aquarium, sakura and syaoran look at a bunch of really cool fish. syaoran speaks chinese, japanese, and english, but does not speak "how to take sakura on a date" without meiling backseat driving. touya and syaoran have a we-don't-get-along contest. the giant glass fish tank breaks again, in a repeat of ccs s1. at night, sakura and syaoran put on their throwback outfits courtesy of tomoyo and have an extended action sequence. sakura's cards are ineffective against the non-watery clear card, but syaoran freezes it in similar fashion to before and sakura captures spiral.

now this really feels like an s1 episode. no ominous sitting around and doing nothing, just a nice date and some card capturing. not too much in plot advancement other than "they kinda sorta went on a date! nothing much happened but they had a good time"

if I were an aquarium and the same showpiece fish tank broke twice in like three years, I'd probably just pack it in. yet here we got a security guard working the same night like nothing weird happened (the tank appears to have somehow been fixed the same day, which I won't question. more property damage happens at night so business must be booming for construction work)

there's a bit of a throwaway gag about how meiling has like supernaturally good timing for contacting people (whether it be sakura or syaoran). you could totally spin this into an actual ability in clampland, probably, but instead I will take note of this for fic purposes

similarly, tomoyo is played in pretty obvious ways in the anime, but "refraining from tagging along on sakura's date while expressing how she really wishes she could go", "picking sakura's outfit for the date", and "making throwback outfits for sakura and syaoran" are easy material for. y'know. things
