syaoran faces his greatest test (not pictured): The Inlaws Interview

what happened this episode

sakura and kero cook for like a minute straight. it's a bento for syaoran, but date day is called off when sonomi relays a message from sakura's great-gramps that he has something to hand off urgently before he leaves the country, and syaoran's invited too.

sakura introduces syaoran with a "he's my... ?????" and syaoran deflects the follow-up entirely. sakura is sent off to do some errands as an excuse to give syaoran the talk about how great-gramps regrets not being able to make amends with nadeshiko, implicitly conveying a seal of approval upon syaoran.

meanwhile, in a spooky empty mansion, sakura finds her mother's old room while searching for tea, and uses Record to turn back time and see nadeshiko as a child. she goes through more and more history before nadeshiko abruptly warns sakura directly to not go any further, lest she cross a point of no return.

akiho and sakura fall into a clockspace dream, and kaito comments that the two have begun to synchronize. akiho, upon awaking, notes that the robe in the dream is her traditional family robe (about time you mention that!). eriol calls kero/yue on his magical phone (as opposed to a normal phone, of which all of them own), and states "his fear is becoming a reality".

this is an appropriately cardcaptor sakura sort of conflict, where something bad is on the horizon, but all the players are on the same team, whether they know it or not. sakura and akiho having a weird magic link really feels like a setup by kaito to help save akiho from ??? through the mysterious power of sakura being OP as hell, but it's anyone's guess how this is happening or why this worries eriol.

also, to emphasize, kero mentions that eriol hasn't responded to him on the phone, but that eriol has summoned him and yue for a magical video phone call. I suppose this is just good opsec (and also slightly more convenient than shoving your face into a rectangle)

on a tangent, I admit that I've never really worked the sonomi angle into my fanfic headcanons of the exact hole that tomoyo digs herself into. working with just the contrast of tomoyo and meiling is plenty but... there's really a lot you could go into if you want
