i mean, the original luddite movement WAS one of worker's rights. New looms were comin in hot and factory owners were keen to cut swaths of their workforce and pay the ones who remained worse because their labor was no longer "skilled". The Luddites wanted better wages and rights for those workers and when they rebelled {started smashing looms when the factory owners said no basically} they were put down violently and from then on the name of their movement was reduced to "technology bad".
as far as communism goes, there's a lot in common there.
(and just to be clear, yeah, under communism this shit would not be nearly the issue it is now, but we dont anything even approaching communism on any systemic level so under our current circumstances, the technology is pretty much just really bad outside of specific edge cases)
I don't know if we can say that there was a lot in common with communism if there were no demands to solve things in a systemic level. Asking for raises is pretty much all what modern social democracy can provide anyway. It's like saying terrorism was a good idea because TNT'ing the royalty was good bc they treated the workers badly. Another Tsar would take place. Killing them one by one changes jack shit. Getting raises can provide a momentary comfort for the workers, and therefore any strikes that ask for that needs to have everybody's support, but the situation will turn to shit eventually regardless. Watch as entertainment companies will find ways to sneak in AI in the creation process of their products despite any laws that could appear to prevent that. It's like a pandora's box. We can't close it anymore. It's here to stay.
And sure, I'd need to be a lunatic to affirm that communism would be just in the horizon. Especially in it's core where I'm assuming it's where you're from. Thing is though, we're going through a climate crisis that will only get worse from here on. People will unavoidably revolt eventually. Billionaires won't do shit to help and will only make things worse. If we don't start talking about it right now and only exclusively talk about breaking machines, taxing the rich and labor wage rises we're all going to be *extinct*
-nods- I understand better where you’re coming from now. I think my initial comment was kinda kneejerk and fell into incrementalist thinking cuz you’re right, we’re careening towards a crisis that’s bigger than mere wages.
n it suvks bcause going from "they're going to automate your livelihood away" to "your survival shouldn't be dependant on technology remaining stagnant" feels like it should be such an easy jump to make! but bosses have been threatening to replace folks with robots for DECADES now, in all kinds of industries, and people still seem to struggle with it!
