God Hand is fantastic. Was critically panned for being "too wacky" when every action game at the time was all gritty and realistic, but these past years it has been receiving the proper appreciation it deserved (kinda what happened to Metal Gear Rising, lol)

Ridge Racer V

Amplitude

Yakuza 1 US if you wanna hear that dub

Ace Combat (4, Zero, 5)

Evergrace (!)

DDR games if u want (ask about these if you're interested, there's a lot)

Some Armored Core games

Dot Hack if you want an obnoxious amount of JRPG

DQ8 if you're into that kinda thing

The Getaway if you like thick english accents

TOCA Race Driver if you like corny cutscenes

Sly Cooper is probably the best furry bait on the console

Ape Escape 2 and 3 (!)

Test Drive Eve Of Destruction if you liked banging model cars together as a kid

God Hand

If you want some big scuffed energy... Battle Construction Vehicles

Outrun 2006

EDIT: Final Fantasy X

Hmm! I'm big on PS2 era jrpgs so here's all the ones I love lol. Sorry in advance. All times faves in bold.

Dark Cloud
Dark Cloud 2
Shining force neo
Drakengard 3 (I didn't play the first two, they're not really necessary. Taro might work on another drakengard, but it's also technically related to nier so if you care about that it's worth it). oops this is PS3 I forgot lol.

Nier and Odin sphere have newer fuller versions obv but theyre og!

Vagrant story is PS1 but worth reccing.
Radiata Stories
Okage: Shadow King
Magna Carta.
Star Ocean: Till the end of time
Wild Arms 3
Okami
Breath of fire 4
Tales of Abyss is one of my all time favorite jrpgs holds up really well. Fully voiced. Also got ported to 3ds.
Tales of Symphonia also a classic but much jankier
Rogue Galaxy
Harvest Moon: Save The Homeland
Chulip
Eternal Poison
Armored Core series
Suikoden 3 & 4 have been on my todo list forever

Uhhh non jrpgs?? I can basically only think of platformers lol.

Spyro enter the dragon fly
Sly Cooper
Jak 2
Prince of Persia
War of The Monsters
Digimon 4 lol

Which platform do you recommend for Tales of Abyss? I also have a hacked 3DS. There's nothing about the graphics or overall presentation that attracts me much, but if you like it this much I'm willing to give it a go. I like some jrpgs from time to time.

Dark Cloud 2 was on my list! I'm glad to have the recommendation reinforced! It has a really nice OST!

I hadn't heard of Radiata Stories! The graphics look gorgeous though, I'm 100% checking it out

First time hearing about Okage: Shadow King too. I like the cartooniness of it. I'm checking it out too

I actually started playing Chulip a bit ago! I went in it having no idea what to expect, and it's so fucking weird lol I'm intrigued by it

I think ToA looks best on PS2! Tho I heard the load times are a lot longer than on the 3DS. It's also handy to have it portable? But overall its a preference thing as I don't think there are any in-game differences!

If you end up liking it, Tales of Vesperia is my next favorite entry, and got ported to switch. It's the last Tales entry that I think holds up in terms of story & presentation, it came out after Abyss so it looks a lot better. They're also all couch co-op up to 4 players (fights only tho), if that has any appeal lol.
But yeah I really love the early Tales entries, they have some of the best localization and VA work of the early 00s, gameplay that does a decent job holding up against time, really cute character dynamics, and lots of weird little secrets & timed events. It's easy to fall off due to being a slow burn and bc it can get a little grindy, but Ive always found the writing & character moments worth it. But uh I...still replay Symphonia/Abyss/Vesperia a lot...lol...so I'm... extremely biased on this one lmao

Dark Cloud 2 is so slept on so I'm glad you're checking out!!! (though don't be hesitant to look up a guide it's kind of opaque at times lol). The localization and performances can be real janky but the atmosphere and uniqueness is sooo worth it!! I really miss this period of LEVEL-5 design 😭

Really good to hear some of these were new titles! PS2 was such a weird experimental era with so many gorgeous games and unique mechanics that were easy to miss and never really survived or evolved. Like Chulip is INSANE?? New games have felt so boring after growing up on all these weird ass titles 😩.

Excited to see what you end up latching on to! πŸ‘€

The Jak & Daxter games are pretty good. And God Hand is always a cult classic. The SMT games are there if you're looking to bust your groin with a jrpg. I can't remember much else off the top of my head.

OH RIGHT SLY COOPER, I forgot completely. Play at least the second game you won't regret it

If you want a strange real time/turn based hybrid rpg, I'd recommend Summoner. I like it, I find it strangely compelling, I'm not certain if anyone else would, but it wouldn't hurt to give it a try.
