On this day four hundred and two year ago, the Pilgrims set sail from Plymouth, England to establish Thanksgiving.
Apparently the Pilgrims had already been living in Holland for more than a decade before leaving for America. This detail seems to be elided in most grade-school tellings of the story.
Also forgotten is the Mayflower's leaky-ass sibling ship Speedwell. The two ships first set sail together but had to turn back for repairs to Speedwell twice. The Mayflower was delayed six weeks waiting for its companion, but ended up having to go it alone anyways.
Celebrate Maylower Day by visiting Leiden, and by procrastinating for up to a month and a half!
