i'm not much of an art historian or even someone who is particularly good at talking about visual art in an informed or intellectual way but i really really love this piece. i saw it in the SFMOMA a few months back, and the pictures don't properly communicate the scale. it's four meters wide and two meters tall, and you can see the thickness of the brush strokes layered atop one another, telling a story about when they were applied and how quickly. apparently it was painted mostly in dim lighting, which is reflected in its sort of sepiatone color choices. it's gorgeous and made me very emotional
