gotta say the internet's response to mickey mouse entering the public domain being "let's make a bunch of art about a disney character, thus providing a bunch of attention to the brand" is kind of disheartening. like i don't think you're giving disney the middle finger by talking about their product. they want that

it's not all of mickey yet, just steamboat willie. but aside from the issues of publicity for disney, there's a lot of people who need to read birth of an industry: blackface minstrelsy and the rise of american animation before they do this shit
yes i am aware it is just steamboat willie but functionally the earliest iteration of the character is now available in the public domain. i am simplifying where exact specification is unnecessary

If you want to buy Mickey Mouse the product what exactly do you buy anyway? What actual Mickey content has even been produced in the last thirty odd years other than a couple TV shows and a handful of direct-to-video movies? I feel like Disney's almost been ashamed of him since the backlash against the Mickey Mouse Protection Act made them realize Mickey couldn't be theirs forever. Immediately after that they killed The Search for Mickey Mouse film they were working on, and he's practically had more airtime on Kingdom Hearts than anything else since then
