"folks" is a great word because it is very brief. "people" is clunky. two syllables. unwieldy. with folks i can be quick and continue unimpeded. there is much time to be saved with careful wording

you can also use "gang". saves on one letter, requires less mouth movement, but in exchange you will sound slightly more like fred from scooby-doo
not true; when i say "there are plenty of folks who would go to the store," the term "gang" is not applicable. i do not use folks as a second person plural-- i find "y'all" to be more useful in that scenario
