wondering if i should write something about my time playing pokemon scarlet. i probably won't because i think my outlook (it's a game with a lot of potential, but is also broken in countless ways that make it fall short of what it could be) is pretty commonly shared at least in the games journalism space? but also nobody is commenting on how fucking slow battles are in the game and i feel like that needs to be heard. battles take so long. they made the text boxes fucking crawl off the screen. there are so many slow animations you have to watch over and over again it's nightmarish

in reply to @cass's post:

I get the feeling that someone in Game Freak is throwing a fit about high skill Pokemon playstyles like Sakurai allegedly did when he made Brawl and added the trip mechanic. Slow ass animations, no set mode, etc. but you know, I just watched Alpharad and PokemonChallenges play a fast and loose nuzlocke most of today and honestly they’re making it work, seemed fun. Not really my style of play but entertaining to listen to while I play on my own

that's the thing, though: they also added a bunch of items for Competitive Play. it's not that they don't want high-skill pokemon playstyles-- hell, they run a whole-ass championship with their defined format-- it's that they want to control what competitive is. it's why they removed a bunch of moves that were useful and interesting in competitive singles. they want it to be a VGC-only metagame, and it sucks.

Oh but also: the slow animations wouldn’t bother me half as much if they didn’t only show the amount of damage status effects like burn do for appx a quarter of a second, at least be consistent
