I just learned about this too!! One of my fave podcasts, You're Wrong About, has a number of eps on the weirdness of figure skating, but their most recent ep on Debi Thomas gets into a bit of the institutional fuckery involved in figure skating w/r/t sexism/racism/homophobia, worth a listen if you want to get more info on that
