happy wednesday! despite it being a short week, we’ve got a good amount of stuff for you today.

first off, as the title suggests, 100% of you should now have access to asks. check your project settings page to enable them!

let’s see the rest:

  • added a new profile link privacy setting: “pages following you”
    • this is especially useful for private pages. since users already need approval to follow you, this lets you share contact info without needing to follow back.
    • it’s probably somewhat useful for public pages too but that’s not what it’s Built For
  • we now show all tags in a share tree, rather than just showing the tags from the most recent share. all tags now live with the post they are attached to!
  • you can no longer block yourself

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! It seriously fixes a huge critical flaw: hopefully resharing my own stuff to bump it will be a lot more easygoing now that tags carry over

I don't think this changes that shares won't appear in the tag searches unless all the posts in the chain have that tag, though. so you're probably still going to have to add all the tags again for visibility reasons. staff please confirm?

confirmed, no changes to how tag pages are populated. only shares with content are added, and only if they use a tag that the OP used OR if the share is also by the OP.

no, they will not see it. muffling takes into account the OP tags and the share tags, however muffling is on a post level, not a thread level, so other posts in the thread might still show up

sad

we now show all tags in a share tree

wtf-

ummm okay okay chill. cohost is not tumblr. we haven't really been using it as tumblr.

BUT it still feels horrible to me to just lose the explicit "Part Of The Post That Does NOT Go Around With Shares" functionality that tumblr tags are famous for!!!!! even though I didn't even use it here!! as a veteran tumblrina i'm offended anyway! and even more so because literally everyone seems happy about it! 😭

we now show all tags in a share tree, rather than just showing the tags from the most recent share. all tags now live with the post they are attached to!

any plans to add a toggle for this? sometimes i like to share a chost without the original tags, and sometimes i like to have my chost’s tags hidden when shared

For those not finding it: Not your user settings (the settings item on the left sidebar from your dash), but your project (page) settings. You can get to it otherwise by clicking the gear icon on your profile.

It's possible I've had the option to enable asks since the very beginning and never knew because I kept checking the wrong settings page.

Is there any practical way to silence somebody's ask responses while seeing the rest of their posts in my feed? Some of the more popular accounts are... Getting a lot of questions and as it turns out I mostly don't want to read those, and it's actually getting kind of cluttering, something I did not think I'd followed enough people to deal with yet.

I love that you're rolling out more and more features, and folks seem to be enjoying themselves, but yeah it's just sort of overwhelming for some accounts whom I'd like to still follow 😅

am i really one of the only people who thinks putting tags in the tag tree is really cumbersome and doesn't help the site at all? it makes conversation chains longer, and it discourages people from using tags on their own page as sorting devices, because now every single person who wants to tag something with a subject will have that subject show up in a reply chain.

is this for users who use tags conversationally? because a fair amount of those users probably expect tags to behave like they do on tumblr, where they don't show up in the reply chain at all. ofc cohost is not tumblr but it's a really strange shock to go from tags behaving like they do on other websites with a similar format (as ways to sort your webpage that do not cross over upon shares) to like, tags suddenly being a part of the public reply chain whether you want them there or not.

i'm sorry but i did try to like it as you can see from how this is a week old post, and it just does not vibe with me at all. it feels like a lot of unnecessary bloating and i don't think the site is more user-friendly to make up for it.
