Utena is one of my top 3 all time, it's so good.
(The commonalities are not a coincidence, G-Witch had several Utena creatives involved.)
I just this week showed the first episode of Utena to a friend who’d not seen it, and I’d forgotten how very witty it is. It often (rightly) gets talked of for its more serious aspects, but it has great gags too.
(The Witch from Mercury is also good, wow cool robot &c.)
the first couple episodes of gwitch are direct utena references. but utena stays incredibly good after that whereas gwitch for me was ultimately disappointing
