Seriously. I spent six months on my most recent job hunt, which involved filling out endless multiple choice tests where the answers were all "if you think any of these are right, I kind of don't want to work with your team" and the timed projects with unclear instructions or "secret criteria" (i.e., you didn't follow our internal guidelines), I don't know how these companies hire anybody.

Although one disgruntled HR person strongly implied to me (apparently, it was her last day) that this is the point, and that a lot of these jobs are bogus to make the existing employees believe that they'll get help soon. Argh.

this would genuinely work! however: it's predicated on the idea of a real commitment to retaining those employees. this means

  1. keeping compensation competitive and not participating in the industry-wide grinding machine that forces everyone to change jobs if they want consistent raises and promotions, suppressing wages largely via the large segment of visa workers who don't have the freedom to shop around, and
  2. maintaining a healthy team environment with accountability for management

...in conclusion, i'm not holding my breath
