today's song is: SUMMER LOVIN TORTURE PARTY, for MSGS MIDI
midi time! i'm not usually one for the four-on-the-floor kick drum in my music, or dancey stuff in general, but i had a good time making this weird take on it. since i used the SFX kit for my channel 10 drums, i made the kick drum by using the "synth drum" patch with a huge, fast pitch bend downward, chiptune style, and i made use of the "melodic tom" and "gunshot" for additional percussion and texture. most of it is just the SFX though, which is maybe my favorite thing to mess around with in MSGS. also i wanted to explore more of the GS extension sounds, such as (used here) "rubber bass", "synth mallet" and "regular-ass saw wave".
i kinda just let loose on this one and played around a lot with sound design. i felt like the result had a sort of demented heavily caffeinated vibe so i shamelessly borrowed a lyric from a The National song for the title. i hope this song helps convince people that MSGS is actually awesome and can do really cool and interesting sounds if you dig deep enough and work at it. honestly in some ways the lack of any real DSP is a boon for the format. i love midi so much!
