recently i've tried to only buy products from brands that existed before 2016 so there's any hope at all that there's a hobbiest forum talking about them instead of Just A Discord

is it still a community if every aspect of it is monetized and exploited and could be discarded and destroyed at the whim of a PowerPoint slide from someone just trying to justify unsustainable infinite growth

... or is that too gatekeepy?

one of the most important bits of personal criticism that another activist directed at us a while back was that we don't get to call something a "community" if the people in it have not done the work to be invested in each other

it's much harder to do that work in corporate settings, because the profit incentive means that the dispute-resolution structures prioritize silencing dissent, but dissent is necessary as part of finding lasting solutions to social problems

but it's certainly still possible. it is ALWAYS possible.

right so like we're an anarchist, so we feel it's our obligation to root-cause these problems so that we don't inadvertently reproduce oppression within the new context we seek to create

corporate behavior is deeply entwined with a lot of this stuff, for sure, and really important to criticize, but we try hard not to STOP there
